Kaizen Open (November 2012)

This tournament was on Saturday the 17th of November 2012 and was located in Kolding (Denmark). On this tournament I did only participate in Kata.

Preparation:
I did have a fair sleep the night before. It was a bit strange to sleep at a new location. Yesterday I did have a very good dinner with a lot of vegetables and I kept away from soda and ice cream, even it was very tempted to have a dessert. In the morning I did have a good breakfast. I started the warm up approximate 1,5 hours before the class should start and was ready for competition. After a conservation with Tine, I chose to go Chinto first and then Jion.

Kata:
There were only six participants in the class.

The first match was against Silvo Dionisio (Germany) and as planed I chose Chinto. I thought the performance was OK, but I felt that I couldn’t performed the Kata 100%, it was something that hold me back. Even though I did have good balance and good with pauses. The result was a lost of 4-1. I was anyway pleased with my performance. He came to the final, so it would be a repechage for me, which was a bronze final.

This round was against Nicolas Burgtorf (Germany) and I chose Jion. In this match I did give even more, after that Tine mentioned that I did have more to give. There were good with pauses and power in the techniques in the Kata. I did “stample” a little after the turn to Jodan Gaiwan Uke, but it was barely noticed. The result was a lost of 5-0 against his Unsu. Even though I was very pleased with my performance.

Summary:
I was very pleased with the performance and did the best I could. It was high level among the competitors on this tournament. Tine and Jonny said that I did perform Jion even better than Chinto. In Chinto it looked like that I hold back the “fighting spirit”. I did see my video of Chinto and it looked clearly that I have more to give. Unfornately there was no video of Jion. I wished that I could have seen the performance of Jion, to compare what was better. Tine mentationed that I could practice to give 100% in every techniques. I could split up the Kata into smaller sequences and perform each of them 100%.

Results:
1. Thomas Noringriis (Denmark)
2. Silvo Dionisio (Germany)
3. Nicolas Burgtorf (Germany)
3. Anders Rasmussen (Denmark)

What to do for the next tournament:

  • Keep having the good feeling after each Kata performance.
  • Practice to have “fighting spirit”, pauses and faster turns.
  • Challenge my self to perform 100% on each techniques.
  • Pratice to extend the kicks.

My own video analysis of Chinto:

  • The announce of the Kata was a bit “sizzy”.
    – Practice to announce the Kata determinded.
  • 2nd technique should be fast, I tried to make it slow this time to see how it would influence the whole presentation of the Kata.
  • I thought that the first turn has no power.
    – Practice to make faster and determined turns.
  • Bad timing in the first “double block”, it came a bit after the landing.
  • The first turn before the “balance part” was undeterminded.
  • The knee lift at the “balance parts” was a bit too low.
    – It should be higher.
    – Tine said that the pull of the arms should be faster.
  • Gedan Barai was weak at the “balance parts”.
  • Timing on Gyaku Zuki was bad.
    – Practice on the timing and stronger punch.
  • The knee lift at the last turn was low too.
    – Practice to keep the knee lift higher.

I thought that Chinto was better than it was under the National Championship. I did have good with puases and the three “Pinan Godan techniques at the end” were very good too. So it seemed that the development was on the right track. I could see that the performance had become better and better, so I had to keep on the hard traning. The focus should be to practice to give 100% in every techniques and turns, and still be relax in the upper body.
